of bid calling as if you have never been to an auction... However, if you have

"I didn't have a clue when I first started to learn how to bid call... Being the son of a
picker I had always been around an auction but never really paid attention to
anything. One day I decided that "I could do that" so I started singing that auction
song in the truck on my way home from auctions. I was too embarrassed to actually
let it out in front of people at that point. I'd rattle in the shower, loved that echo... I'd
chant when I mowed the yard or even when I was in a very loud room or a loud bar...
Loud enough so only I could hear myself of course. One day it hit me that I was
getting pretty good so I started doing it more in the open... My friends thought it was
fun at first but they quickly got annoyed. My wife almost left me once because I
would stop...! Not really but she got mad.
About a year after my own practicing I signed up for the Mendenhall School of
Auctioneering in High Point, NC. It was a 9 day course 8 hours a day. The focus was
not learning how to chant but learning the rules and regulations in the auction
business. Well, the very first day we were all in line, about 50 of us. As we stood in
front of the registration table and got our receipt the lady would say ok, go to the
next table and wait your turn. At the next table sat a 5 inch plastic 3 legged pig and
one of the instructors who had a tape recorder. I was 5th or so in line with 47 people
behind me still in line... This table was within 5 ft of the big line of strangers. I could
hear the people in front of me barely speaking one of them actually leaned over and
talked very very quietly into the recorder. Not knowing what was really going on I sat
down in the chair and taped on the table was a paragraph that read... My name is
___________ this is what a good auctioneer sounds like.
You had to read that line, insert your name, and sell that 3 legged pig in front of the
whole line... What the hell..!!! I was nervous and without even thinking I sat straight up
and started that chant that I had worked on for the last 6 months... Without warning
both my hands flew up and I began catching imaginary bidders with them... My voice
was cracking from the nerves as the instructor calmly said YEP, YEP... To emulate the
bidders that weren't there. I seriously couldn't tell if he was laughing at me or not and
when i was done I insisted that he give me his bid number.
Well there it was... I had finally called in front of my first crowd... I almost passed out
but I made it. The week was long and if you would have walked in on us you would
have thought we were a cult... 55 people counting to 100 all in sinc by 1's, 5's, 10's and
2.5's. I gained a lot of confidence and microphone technique.
The big day was coming... Our class had its first live auction where actual bidders
would be bidding... That was a nerve racking day let me tell you. Each of us had to
bring 3 items and we got to sell them that night. My official very first sale was 3
walking liberty half dollars... They brought $42... Holy cow I thought, I am good at this if
I just got 28 to 1 out of silver coins. I liked that microphone and speaker combo, it
made our voices bounce very well. That was a relief after those 3 items were sold
and it took a lot of the pressure off. The nerves will kill you but you have to realize
that everyone in the crowd wants you to do good... 99% of them couldn't get up
there and sell a spoon to a blind man so trust me they don't judge you.
I saw more than half of our class struggle with the chanting portion of the course and
really thought that it was a shame they didn't take a course on chanting before they
came to auction school... They were so worried about the chant that they couldn't
focus on any of the book work for the rules and regulations... The state tests are very,
very hard.
About a year after the school I decided to put a program together that would help
others like myself and my classmates... I wanted the course to be as close to what I
did in the self teaching of my chant. Lots of counting, lots of filler word practice and
lots of singing #'s. So here we have LEARNTOCHANT.
"This course is designed to take novice and professional
auctioneer's bid calling to the next level... we have helped
over 500 clients in the last year achieve a great chant... what
are you waiting for..."
